Maybe because ugliness engages the mind more than beauty, people tend to fixate on their flaws rather than their image as a whole. Some of the most handsome and beautiful people I know want to change something of their features, when everyone around them sees their beauty as ethereal. Ugliness is a surface aspect, I prefer to look deeper into things I see or hear. For instance, that door in your photo is magnificent. It reminds me of a door to a barn near my home. So much character to describe and think about.
