A little catch up on the thoughts I’ve been having and the things I’ve been consuming:
I am very exhausted by the way well-meaning left-leaning people interact with the right wing internet grift. The entire thing is predicated on their ability to piss people off and its proliferation is a direct effect of people being unable to to ignore them. These are not people acting in good faith; they don’t believe 3/4 of the stuff they say. They are just making money by acting like a middle school bully trying to get a laugh from their peers. Ignore them and watch them wither away!
I have been watching Girls for the first time and I am completely surprised at how taken I am with this show. For years, everyone on Twitter made it sound like it was garbage. It’s so well written with such specificity and Lena Dunham is an incredible comedic actress. I’ve been sending voice notes to my friend Emma as I watch, most recently one where I had to choke through full body sobs after Season 4, Episode 5. Fuck you, Adam.
I always feel a bit hesitant to write about media that I consume years after it came out. But I suppose that means I just need to get better at relating it to my world today.
Last May, I started a spreadsheet tracking every person who appeared in my dreams with the intent to do so for a full year. I am so excited that I am actually close to completing the project. As of this morning, I have 933 entries. Even better, I have an idea on how I’m going to write about this once it’s complete.
I think we have historically been very wrong about quitting things. We should always try new adventure and commit to them as long as we can. But why should we suffer longer than we have to? (Signed, someone who has sweet, satisfying dreams about quitting the high school sports that caused me intense anxiety.)
My favorite book I’ve read so far this year is Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward. Ooooof what a MEMOIR. I don’t often cry at books, but this one got me.
I can’t listen to music with lyrics while I’m writing, but I can when I’m doing the graphic design portion of my job. So for the last two months I’ve had a lot more music in my day to day and it has truly lightened my mood.
I didn’t watch a single Unrivaled game but I did keep up with it fanatically on social media. I just don’t sit down to watch sports that often unless it’s the Iowa Hawkeye Women’s Basketball team or the Green Bay Packers. But, I support all women hoopers with full force.
P.S. Here are a few articles I’ve written for the Business Record recently. I would be honored if you checked them out. Stay tuned for my piece publishing next week. It was intimidating at first, but I’m really proud of it.
